Why do we need to study plants on green walls?

What are the measured criterias of a functional green wall?

Flowering plants on the living wall attracting pollinators

Biodiversity, especially pollinators

Green walls can bring back biodiversity through its vertical space by providing suitable habitats. For example, flowering plants offer food and shelter high above the street, linking parks and gardens into a network wildlife can travel along. Those visitors carry pollen and seeds as they go, helping greenery across Singapore grow better.

Consistent Thermal Cooling

This measurement helps to assess the potential cooling benefits of green walls when deciding which building facades to prioritise, particularly those exposed to strong sunlight, and inform expectations of temperature moderation.

Maintainence Expectations

During the first 12 months, monthly pruning helps establish healthy growth, manage foliage density, and maintain clearance around windows. After establishment, maintenance typically shifts to quarterly visits.

This provides building owners and facility managers with a practical starting point for planning labour, maintenance budgets, and long-term upkeep, while recognising that monitoring-intensive installations may require more frequent maintenance.
